The Center for Serious Play is led by Wanda Gregory, Lecturer in the Science and Technology Program. Wanda has taught courses in game design, virtual worlds, and games for girls at UW Seattle and UW Bothell since 2005. She has extensive industry experience, having been Associate Producer for Edutainment Titles at Sierra Online, Senior Director of Online Media for Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro, Group Product Manager at Microsofts Xbox.com, and Executive Producer for Interactive Entertainment at Hidden City Games. More recently, she was Vice President and Executive Producer for Flowplay overseeing the development of an MMO for tweens and teens. Wanda is a graduate of the UW, where she received a B.A. in English Literature, and her M.B.A. and M.A. in Communications. She is an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Tasmania, Australia, where she teaches classes on game design in conjunction with the HitLab.
Leading the Center’s industry engagement activites will be Alex St. John. Alex is a leader in the gaming industry, having pioneered and promoted leading-edge media technologies for Microsoft in the late 1990’s. He created Microsoft’s ubiquitous DirectX media platform used by all PC video, music and 3D games today, which ultimately led to the development of the DirectXBox. In 1997 he founded WildTangent Inc. the world’s largest privately held online game network, which publishes a catalog of over 1000 games electronically worldwide. More recently, Alex was an Entrepreneur in Residence for the UW TechTransfer program, where he worked to migrate leading-edge media technology and research from the laboratory to the market.
